Rhinoplasty requires expert precision on the part of the plastic surgeon and is the most challenging of all the facial plastic surgery procedures. Extensive experience is imperative to achieve excellent results consistently.

During the consultation, the surgeon seeks to clearly understand the exact expectations of the patient, a process which is aided by video imaging technology that presents a helpful visual to the patient of what the nose reconstruction will look like.

About the Procedure

Patients receiving nasal surgery are placed under twilight anesthesia. Incisions may be made internally or externally. External incisions are placed between the nostrils to allow for entry into the nose. Portions of underlying bone and cartilage can be removed, relocated or added to. Bumps in the nose can be reduced or removed entirely. The nose can be made narrower or the tip of the nose can be made smaller or lifted to achieve a desired shape. When a nose is reduced in size, the nostril openings may need to be reduced accordingly.

At the conclusion of the procedure, the tissues are placed back over the reconstructed form and the incisions closed.

Recovery

A splint and tape are used to protect the new form of the nose. Swelling and bruising can be reduced through the use of cold compresses and by keeping the head elevated for a couple days. Subtle swelling will remain for several months post surgery.
